Es el primer Atlas de oftalmología,  escrito en alemán y francés, edición bilingüe, 33,5 x 28, encuadernación holandesa con puntas, 42 páginas, contiene 12 láminas en color fuera de texto  con 57 ilustraciones, “copias escrupulosas de la naturaleza”,  en cromolitografía que dibujó y pintó personalmente el autor, acompañadas de un texto explicativo. Este Atlas compara retinas sanas y enfermas y demuestra la existencia de ciertas condiciones ópticas. Obra dedicada a Albrecht von Graefe, destacado oftalmólogo con el que Liebreich había trabajado, y Herman Helmholtz, inventor del primer oftalmoscopio (Charles Babbage invento el primero en 1847 pero no lo publico por lo que Helmholtz se lleva los créditos). Tal como señala en el prefacio, deseaba que sirviera no sólo para sus colegas de lengua alemana sino también para los médicos franceses. Fue muy celebrado en todo el mundo y se tradujo a otras lenguas, entre ellas el inglés  y castellano en 1870 y siguió siendo la obra de referencia durante muchos años.

First atlas of Ophthalmoscopy, published simultaneously in French and German, 33, 5 x 28 Cm, Contains 57 colour drawings of the eye. Liebreich benefitted from being an incredibly skilled artist, and it was this ability which underpinned the success of his Atlas. Dedicated to Hermann Helmholtz, who in 1851 invented the first ophthalmoscope, (Charles Babbage is recognised in some quarters for inventing the ophthalmoscope in 1847. However, his failure to promote the discovery ensured that the majority of credit was passed to Helmholtz) and Albert Von Graefe, famed ophthalmologist Liebreich also worked as assistant.

This Atlas  offered the medical profession the means to understand a living retina, the images contained within the Atlas are describes as “scrupulous copies of nature” and gave doctors around the world beautifully comprehensive comparisons between healthy and diseased retinas, as well as demonstrating the appearance of certain optical conditions.

The Atlas had worldwide reach and influence. It was originally but soon after versions appeared in both Spanish and English.

Illustré par 12 planches couleur hors-texte contenant 57 figures tirées en chromolithographie, accompagnées d'un texte explicatif et dessinées d'après nature. Avec texte en allemand en vis à vis. Richard Liebreich (1830-1917) était l'assistant de Helmholtz au moment de l'invention de l'ophtalmoscope. Il s'agit du premier atlas sur le fond de l'œil.
